Planning of security lanes

Components

A security lane consists wholly or partly of:

• A baggage X-ray device
• A walk-through metal detector
• Security staff with hand-held detectors as well as equipment for entry and exit control and for managing the flow of people (e.g. single-person access systems)
• Additional security and protection through the concrete check of the target person and the deterrent effect of the installation.

Important aspects

Before deciding on a security lane, there are many topics to settle. These aspects are among them:

• Structural constraints: Narrow accesses, stairs, floor conditions or electrical connections shape layout, size and device selection.
• Electronic sources of interference: Cameras, alarm systems, radios, Wi-Fi, lifts, generators, switch boxes and covered areas disturb the measurement. We record them early, already in the planning phase and in the choice of location.
• People flow: What matters is the visitors per unit of time and the capacity needed at the chosen security level. The higher the security level, the lower the flow.
• Required security level: Which dangerous items are to be detected, for instance liquids, knives, weapons, explosives or mobile devices? A correctional facility has a different threat level (life and limb, smuggling) than a warehouse (theft).
