Metal detectors at schools are the exception in Germany. If your institution or its authority considers entrance screening, for instance after a concrete incident, it rests on the right to control the premises. We advise you factually in this situation. The educational concept comes before the technology.

The concept decides, not the device

A check at the school entrance only works if the school community supports it. Design the process so that pupils get to their lessons on time. The check becomes a transition into a protected space, not harassment. Involve teachers, parents and pupils in advance. Clarify open questions early, for instance about the mobile phone or the metal musical instrument. In violent incidents at schools, knives appear far more often than handguns. A metal detector detects both.

Technology developed for schools

The Garrett Paragon comes with four programs developed together with school authorities. Its high-security school program detects vapes as well as weapons. According to the manufacturer, more than 1,000 schools work with Garrett detectors. The 2024 SAVER market survey by the US Department of Homeland Security lists the technology, based on these figures, with throughput on a par with dedicated weapons detectors.
