Airport security

At airports we advise on the planning and supply metal detectors and X-ray systems for screening people, hand baggage, hold baggage and cargo. In addition we handle training, maintenance and ongoing support.

Legal framework and screening duty

The Aviation Security Act (LuftSiG) governs the screening duties. Under section 8 LuftSiG, the airport operator secures the airside and screens its own and external staff, vehicles and goods before entry. Under section 9, the air carrier screens the passengers and their baggage. The details are set out in EU Implementing Regulation 2015/1998. Even at high throughput, no prohibited item may reach the security area.

Approved technology

Only tested devices are approved for use at airports. In Germany the Federal Aviation Office (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt) certifies aviation security equipment. The Garrett PD 6500i carries the international approvals of TSA, ECAC, STAC and AENA. For the screening it comes with matching programs, including

They detect weapons such as pistols and knives without triggering needlessly on coins or keys. The manual secondary check with the hand-held metal detector complements the lane, and X-ray scanners detect explosives, drugs and weapons in baggage and cargo.

Fast flow in the terminal

On heavily used screening lanes, every second counts. When the walk-through detector triggers, its zone display shows the screening staff where on the body the signal arose. The secondary check with the hand-held detector then targets that spot, instead of sending the person through the lane again, and the lane keeps moving. Through a network module, several walk-through detectors can be monitored and set from one control station, which simplifies the management of several lanes at a large terminal.

Trained and certified staff

Screening staff must be trained and certified. The Federal Aviation Office recertifies operators of X-ray and explosives detection equipment every three years. We instruct your staff on the devices and support you beyond installation with maintenance and updates.

Contactless temperature detection

Optionally, Garrett SmartScan technology integrates a contactless body temperature measurement into the walk-through detector. It gives the operator discreet feedback without interrupting the flow of people.

Safety notes for screening passengers

• Screening with the security scanner at the airport is always voluntary.
• Final certainty comes from looking inside the baggage or the manual personal check. For this the passenger turns to the security staff or to the Federal Police (Bundespolizei).
• In Germany only security scanners approved under EU regulation are used, which work with non-ionising radiation. The software shows only pictograms, no body images, and stores no data.
• After walking through, the passenger is directed to a screening station.
