Hand-held metal detector

Hand-held metal detectors locate metal precisely. In the security lane they handle the secondary check after the walk-through detector, and beyond that everywhere single people or objects are checked in a targeted way. They also find the smallest objects, but need more time per person than a walk-through detector.

How it works

Hand-held metal detectors work like walk-through detectors with an electromagnetic field, here around the detection wand. When it meets metal, the field changes, and the device reports the find audibly or by vibration. The penetration depth depends on the device and the object and is usually at most 10 cm.

The Garrett Super Scanner V, originally developed for the 1984 Olympic Games, exceeds the US test standard NIJ 0602.02. It detects a medium-sized pistol from around 23 cm, a large knife from 15 cm and even a razor blade from a few centimetres. The devices are ready to use immediately without setup and available in two lengths, 50 cm with a large detection area and 25 cm particularly handy.

Other important aspects

• Operation is learned in a short time.
• Together with X-ray scanners or walk-through detectors, hand-held detectors usually cause no interference. Keep about three metres of distance from metal fences and barriers.
• Certificates confirm that the devices do not affect medical implants such as pacemakers. We nevertheless prefer to pat down people with a pacemaker manually.
• Hand-held detectors are maintenance-free. Check the function in everyday use with a test object and have the device inspected every two years.
• There are no separate legal standards for hand-held metal detectors, and no personal data is stored.
